Your District Forester Alpena and Montmorency Counties .The mission of the Forestry Assistance Program (FAP) is to:
"Support family forest owners in realizing the economic, social, and ecological sustainability of their forests." Dr. Greg Corace is an initial professional contact for FAP in Alpena and Montmorency Counties. Greg began working at the Alpena-Montmorency Conservation District July 2019. Greg has a Bachelor's of Science (Zoology) and a Master's of Science (Biology) from Northern Michigan University and a Ph.D. (Forest Science) from Michigan Technological University. Greg was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana. Click here for a full resume/CV for Dr. Corace. Over the last 20+ years, Greg has conducted forest planning, applied research, management, and inventory and monitoring on public and private lands in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. To enhance the missions of the Forestry Assistance Program, the Alpena-Montmorency Conservation District, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Greg will: 1) Listen to landowners and help them formulate their land ownership goals and make informed forest management decisions with their goals in mind. 3) Promote the Qualified Forest Program and facilitate the interaction between consulting foresters and landowners. 4) Conduct outreach with an emphasis on contemporary principles of forest ecology and management as they relate to biological diversity and ecological integrity. A Forest is Much More Than Trees
Distinguished Ecologist Lecture Series 2015: Dr. Jerry F. Franklin
The Ecosystem Science Center of the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University, the Applied Sciences Program at Seney National Wildlife Refuge (USFWS), Northern Research Station (USFS), and the Lake States Fire Science Consortium hosted Dr. Jerry Franklin, Professor of Ecosystem Analysis at the College of Forest Resources, University of Washington, as part of Michigan Tech’s Distinguished Ecologist Lecture Series. Dr. Franklin’s visit provided an opportunity for students, faculty and local land managers to interact with a leading expert in forest ecosystem science and management. Dr. Franklin is an accomplished scientist in the field of forest ecology, and has been a driving force behind the concepts and practices of Ecological Forestry. He is an expert in the structure and function of old-growth forests and forest stand dynamics, and has worked on issues such as global change, spotted owl management in the Pacific Northwest, variable retention harvesting, and forest landscape management.
