Forestry, and many related scientific disciplines, have developed in the United States  over the past 125+ years. During this same amount of time, many related professional societies have formed, each with a unique mission statement. Below is a sampling of these organizations, but the list is far from exhaustive. The name of each organization is linked to a website providing more details and the user is encouraged to investigate further.

Forest Stewards Guild

The Forest Stewards Guild practices and promotes responsible forestry as a means of sustaining the integrity of forest ecosystems and the human communities dependent upon them.

Society for Ecological Restoration (SER)

SER advances the science, practice and policy of ecological restoration to sustain biodiversity, improve resilience in a changing climate, and re-establish an ecologically healthy relationship between nature and culture.

Society for Conservation Biology
Founded in 1986, the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) proudly serves as the premier international membership society of professionals, students, and non-profits who dedicate their work towards advancing the science and practice of conserving biodiversity.

​The Wildlife Society
Founded in 1937, the organization’s mission is “To inspire, empower, and enable wildlife professionals to sustain wildlife populations and habitats through science-based management and conservation.” The Wildlife Society enhances our members’ networking and learning opportunities, professional and career development, and provides numerous ways for them to get more involved in creating a better future for wildlife and their habitats.

Society of American Foresters

The mission of the Society of American Foresters is to advance sustainable management of forest resources through science, education, and technology; to enhance the competency of its members; to establish professional excellence; and to use our knowledge, skills, and conservation ethic to ensure the continued health, integrity, and use of forests to benefit society in perpetuity.

Ecological Society of America

The Ecological Society of America is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of scientists founded in 1915 to:

• promote ecological science by improving communication among ecologists;
• raise the public’s level of awareness of the importance of ecological science;
• increase the resources available for the conduct of ecological science; and
• ensure the appropriate use of ecological science in environmental decision making by enhancing communication between the ecological community and policy-makers.​
