Tree Planting & Site Selection:
Characteristics to consider for planting

Natural / man-made features that exist on your site may influence which trees and shrubs you plant and where they are placed:

  1. Do they need shade?
  2. Do they need full sun?
  3. Do they need dry or moist soil?
  4. How tall with they grow?
  5. How wide will they grow?

How far apart should the trees be?
  1. Tree Planting - Plant Spacing Reforestation:
  • Pines: 7 ft. x 8 ft. with 700 trees per acre.
  • Spruces: 6 ft. x 8 ft. with 900 trees per acre.
  • Windbreaks: 8 ft. x 10 ft. between rows.

Be sure to avoid the following:

  1. Planting shade intolerant trees under mature trees.
  2. Planting on septic drain fields.
  3. Planting trees within 10-12 feet of overhead wires.
  4. Planting trees within 10-12 of a building.
  5. Planting evergreens where they may obstruct vision near roads.
  6. Planting salt intolerant plants next to roadways.
